Cave City Men Killed In Auto Wreck Tuesday
Cave City -- The absence of a stop sign at an intersection near Princeton apparently figured in the traffic death of two Cave City men Tuesday afternoon.
Dead were Johnny B. Gerald, 72, a carpenter, and Hershel Houston Proffitt, 70, a farmer. Proffitt was the father of Cave City Mayor Roger Proffitt.
State Police said the accident occurred at a construction site where a stop sign had been removed for construction purposes.
A car driven by Jesse Martin Freeman, 59, Louisville, collided at the intersection with the Proffitt auto. Freeman and his son, 15, both were reported injured.
The Cave City men had been on a fishing trip to Caldwell County where the fatal accident occurred.
Gerald is survived by his widow, Ethel Gerald; three sons, Sherman Gerald, Tampa Fla., Billy Gerald, Louisville and Johnny Gerald, Jr., Baker, La.; five daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Calhoun, Mrs. Georgia Rysher, Mrs. Imogene Pedigo and Mrs. Maxine McKee, all of Louisville and Mrs. Katherine Calcarco, New York City; two brothers, H.B. and Arthur Gerald; three sisters, Mrs. Willie Hogan, Cave City, Lottie Lively, Mrs. Lawrence Tisdale; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Gardner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are at present incomplete.
