He joined the 2nd Tennessee Volunteer Militia, under Captain Jacob Hartsell, and served in the War of 1812 from October 12, 1813 to February 8, 1814. He received two land warrants for his service (40 acres each), first warrant, he sold and assigned away, second warrant, there is no records as to what he had done with it. No records have been found that he owned land in Tennessee. He was taxed in Washington County, Tennessee in 1815 again in 1816 and 1817, as one white pole with no land. Stephen moved to Cumberland County, Kentucky in 1816, the part of that county he was living in became Monroe County in 1820. He could not read nor write.
He is listed in the 1820 - 1860 Monroe County, KY., Censuses. In 1850 census his real estate value was $200. On the 1860 census his real estate value was $350 and his Personal was $300. In 1866, Stephen was living about four miles from Tompkinsville on the wagon road to Burksville, his post office address was Rockbridge.
[2301] Pension paper work from the War of 1812.. On his "Declaration of surviving soldier for Pension" papers dated March 31, 1871, it reads, "...declares that is is married; that is wife's name was Nancy Stansberry to whom he was married at Washington County Tenn on the 10 day of January 1811". On another sheet of paper regarding his death it reads, marriage of soldier and widows, "March 20, 1810 in Jonesborough, Ky." I have come across two papers before Stephen died that read they were married in 1811 and two after he died that read they married in 1810 (the second one saying they married in Tenn.)
