Was a member of the Union League in Cooke County, Texas during the Civil War. The Confederate mob that took over in October, 1862, imprisoned him and his brother Mansel A. Bailey, but unlike some family members, escaped lynching. It is said that Nancy Bailey Hill, his mother, marched up to General McCullough, told him that she was a loyal Confederate and a descendant of Oliver Cromwell, and for him to release her sons. Reportedly, the general was glad to accommodate the formidable Mrs. Hill.
There is a J.M. Baley on the Aug. 31, 1863 Tarrant County, Texas Tax List. James is listed in the "First Settlers of Lamar County" as receiving 320 acres of land on Sept. 13, 1841 because as of Aug. 21, 1840 he'd turned 17. Unconditional Certificate was issued, May 21, 1849.
