Was a member of the Union League in Cooke County, Texas during the Civil War. The Confederate mob that took over in October, 1862, imprisoned him and his brother James Monroe Bailey, but unlike some family members, escaped lynching. It is said that Nancy Bailey Hill, his mother, marched up to General McCullough, told him that she was a loyal Confederate and a descendant of Oliver Cromwell, and for him to release her sons. Reportedly, the general was glad to accommodate the formidable Mrs. Hill.
He is listed as MA. Bailey, age 45 born in Miss. on the 1880 Cooke Co. Texas Census.
