He was listed on different census' as insane, lunatic, and idiot. According to court records from Cooke County, Texas he was "placed" in the State Lunatic Asylum, March 11, 1861.
According to a letter from the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation/Austin State Hospital, Medical Records Department. (dated Oct. 3, 2000, Austin, Texas)
"He was admitted on 3/11/1861 from Cook County at the age of 28. He was a native of Alabama. He was diagnosed with mania. There is no date of discharge.
"His second admission was on April 25, 1879 at the age of 41. His diagnosis was mania chronic. There is no other information available."
